The Ford F-150 is one of the most popular and recognized American pickup trucks. Despite its popularity, the F-150 is not the most reliable. According to Ford Problems, a website that aggregates public and owner-submitted data, the F150 is Ford’s 39th most reliable vehicle… out of 42.

Like all car models, the F-150 has been the subject of several recalls. Using this data and data from specialized websites such as MotorBiscuit, Lemon Lawyers, and Lemon Law Experts, we wanted to showcase the most common problems with this ultra-popular pickup truck model.

Transmission problems on the Ford F-150

Affected years: 2009-2014, 2011-2013, 2014, 2018-2020, 2021, 2022-2023, 2024-2025.

According to MotorBiscuit, transmission problems have been common in Ford F-150s for several years and occur in several models.

The 6-speed automatic transmission in 2009 to 2014 models could have shifting problems. Some models would also drop down to second gear. These issues could appear as early as 115,000 to 160,000 kilometers.

In 2011 to 2013 models, the transmission tended to slip, causing unexpected gear changes and sometimes even complete transmission failure. These problems occur between 120,000 and 200,000 kilometers.

Finally, in the 2018, 2019, and 2020 models, the 10-speed transmission caused disturbing noises, had slippage problems, and did not always communicate accurately with the driver interface, causing incorrect displays. These problems could appear as early as 45,000 kilometers.

In addition, the Lemon Law Experts website highlights a dozen recalls of the Ford F-150’s automatic transmission since 2021.

Ford F-150 engine problems

Affected years: 1997-2004, 2004-2008, 2018-2020

According to MotorBiscuit, engine problems are also relatively common on F-150s.

Engines in F-150s produced between 2004 and 2008 are known for their problems. Typically, they had issues with spark plug ejection, irregular idling, and stalling. The spark plug problem was particularly unpleasant, as this type of repair is often complex and expensive. These problems were common on the 10th generation (2004-2008) and during the 11th generation (2004-2008).

These problems appeared between 135,000 and 190,000 kilometers of mileage.

In more recent models, between 2018 and 2020, oil consumption was deemed excessive and problematic, also causing long-term durability issues. This problem led to a lawsuit in the United States.

Electrical problems in the Ford F-150

Affected years: 2015-2017, 2021-2025

Newer Ford F-150 models often have problems with their electronic systems.

MotorBiscuit reports that common complaints concern the onboard computer systems, which tend to freeze or crash. This is particularly the case with models from 2015 to 2017. Furthermore, the vehicle’s battery tended to drain quickly due to faulty electrical wiring.

Newer models still have these problems, according to Texas-based Lemon Lawyers. They noted problems with the onboard computer, premature battery discharge, and lights coming on in the dashboard. These problems still happen on models from 2021-2025

These problems can occur after 65,000 to 125,000 kilometers on the road.

Brake problems on the F-150

Affected years: 2013-2016

MotorBiscuit reports that F-150s produced between 2013 and 2016 have mechanical problems related to the brake cylinder, which could cause brake fluid leaks. These problems occurred with mileage between 80,000 and 145,000 kilometers.
