Every truck that goes down costs money that is not coming in. For a fleet manager, the math is straightforward: a truck that breaks down on the road costs three times more than a truck maintained on a schedule. And within a heavy truck’s mechanical systems, suspension is one of the areas where preventive maintenance delivers the highest return.

Why suspension is the most critical area for preventive maintenance

Suspension is the connection between the truck and the road. All forces (load, braking, acceleration, cornering) pass through it. And unlike the engine, which has warning lights and fault codes, suspension deteriorates silently. There is no dashboard alert for a worn bushing or a fatigued spring.

  • Air bag height check on both sides, truck empty (air suspension systems)
  • Shock absorber inspection for visible oil leaks
  • Ball joint and tie rod end boot condition check
  • Lubrication of grease fittings where applicable (king pins, U-joints)

Every 50,000 to 80,000 km

  • Bushing inspection: spring eye bushings, silent blocks, torque rod bushings, equalizer pivot
  • Tie rod end and drag link play check
  • Height control valve check (air suspension)

Can suspension maintenance be done at the fleet yard?

Visual checks, lubrication and simple torque verifications: yes. Detailed diagnostics, component replacement and laser alignment require the truck to come into the shop. Laser alignment cannot be done on a parking lot.
