The propeller shaft (also known as drive shaft) is a vehicle component for transmitting mechanical power. Its power acts with a connection of a torque and a rotary movement.
Transmission shaft rotation is quite fast. You can see this when it sends a signal to rear wheels of your vehicle. To perform well, balancing work is essential.
When operating problems arise from drive shaft, your driving deteriorates. More specifically, we have listed four common problems that you can recognize. This will also help you know if it is a drive shaft problem or slip yoke.
What are Common Mechanical Drive Shaft Problems?
1) Loud noise or squeaking
When you accelerate, do you hear a deafening noise? Likewise, do you perceive changes as you move back or forward?
If you hear abnormal noises while driving, have your drive shaft inspected. Most of the time, this is a problem with the slip yoke.
A squealing noise could mean your drive shaft is defective, unbalanced, or has a worn part. The noise usually comes from the underside of your 4Ă—4 or Jeep.
2) Vibrations under the vehicle
A vehicle’s vibration could be a sign of a failing drive shaft. It is often due to worn bushings, which normally prevent vibration.
As the vibration increases, it can worsen and damage other transmission parts.
3) Jerks during acceleration
Problems may occur if the universal joint turns too fast or doesn’t turn at all. Bearing cap seals could be rusted, or the universal joint may lack stability.
Replacing the drive shaft is advised to prevent worsening the condition of your 4Ă—4 or Jeep.
4) Wheel problems
If you try to turn your vehicle but the wheels don’t respond immediately, you may feel resistance. This can indicate a drive shaft issue.
