“Pulls right.” Two words on a driver report, and one of the hardest complaints to act on in a bus fleet. Here is why: pavement is built with a crown so water runs off to the shoulder, and a bus lives in the right lane, the most tilted strip of road in the network. Some of that drift is the road doing exactly what it was designed to do. The rest of it is your vehicle telling you something.

How to sort it out before you pull the unit from service, what wheel alignment actually explains, and what it does not.
Heavy steering effort, a body that visibly leans at rest, a noise that shows up only in turns: those are three separate problems with three separate diagnostic paths. They are not covered here.
One complaint, three different vehicles behaviours
Before anyone measures an angle, find out what the driver actually felt. “It pulls” gets used for three situations that lead in completely different directions.
- The bus wanders off line when the wheel is loose in your hands. Steering wheel straight, light grip, and the unit walks toward the line on its own. That is true lateral pull, and it points at the steer axle geometry more directly than anything else.
- The bus tracks straight, but the steering wheel sits crooked. No fight to stay in the lane, except the driver has to hold the wheel a few degrees off centre to do it. That is not a pull. It usually points at how toe is split between the two front wheels, or at a rear axle that is not pushing along the centreline of the vehicle.
- The bus wanders both ways without committing to a side. Constant small corrections, left then right, but no real drift. That reads as play in the steering rather than an angle out of spec, and it gets checked a different way. Our article on steering play walks through that one.

First filter: the pavement or the bus?
Road crown is the most ordinary cause of a rightward drift, and a bus is the unit most exposed to it in any mixed fleet. A highway tractor changes lanes, passes, and spends hours on newer, straighter pavement. A route bus or a school bus stays pinned in the curb lane all day, often on residential streets where the cross slope is at its steepest.
Two checks settle it, and neither one requires a lift.
Swap lanes. On a straight, clear, safe stretch, out of service and empty, compare how the bus behaves in the right lane versus the left. If the drift flips sides or fades when you move over, you were following the slope of the road and the bus is probably fine. If it leans the same way in both lanes, the problem came with the vehicle.
Find flat ground. A terminal apron, a garage yard or a service lane is far flatter than any street. A drift that still shows up at low speed on flat ground has nothing left to do with the pavement.
💡 Set both front tires to the same cold pressure before either check. An uneven pair up front is enough to fake a pull, and it is the cheapest thing you will verify all day.
Second filter: empty or loaded?
This is where a bus diagnoses differently from a truck. A tractor runs loaded or empty for hours at a stretch. A bus changes weight dozens of times a shift, and every passenger boards and steps off through the same door, on the same side.
That quirk is a free diagnostic tool. Ask the driver when the pull shows up.
- Same pull empty and full. Load is not the variable, so the steer axle angles themselves are the likely source.
- Pull only under a load of passengers. Geometry holds empty and moves under weight. Now you are looking at suspension: one tired leaf spring, worn bushings, or a levelling valve that is not bringing the body back up evenly on an air ride unit.
- Only while slowing down, never at a steady speed. Not a geometry problem. That gets checked elsewhere, and an alignment will not fix it.
If the body sits visibly lower on one side, empty and parked, that is its own symptom with its own path, and it gets settled before anyone measures angles.
What actually makes a bus pull
Once both filters point at the vehicle, the list of geometric explanations is short. Full definitions of the angles live in our article on camber, caster and toe. Here is what matters when the complaint is a drift.
Caster split between left and right. Caster does not wear tires, but it is what keeps the vehicle tracking straight. The absolute number is not what causes a pull: the side to side difference is. The bus heads toward the side carrying the least positive caster. On a leaf spring steer axle, caster is corrected with shims between the axle and the spring, and a spring that settles on one side alone shifts that angle without anyone touching a bolt.
Camber split between left and right. Same logic, opposite direction: the bus heads toward the side with the more positive camber. On many heavy steer axles camber is not adjustable at all, so a camber reading out of spec is not a setting to dial in, it is a warning. Bent axle, worn spindle, damaged component. On a bus, the likely history is easy to picture: docking against a concrete curb dozens of times a day loads the same right front wheel, year after year.
A rear axle that is not pushing straight. When the drive axle pushes slightly off centre, the bus crabs down the road and the driver holds the wheel off centre to stay in the lane. This one usually gets reported as a crooked steering wheel rather than a pull, which is exactly why the first question matters. ⚠️ Read the angles as a pair
An alignment printout can show both sides sitting inside the manufacturer’s range and still describe a bus that pulls. For a drift complaint, the number that matters is the gap between left and right, not whether each side passes on its own. That is the first line we look at when the work order says the unit pulls.
Why buses get reported late
On a truck, one driver usually owns one unit. He feels the change week over week and says so. In a bus fleet, a single unit can pass through several drivers between shifts, relief runs and summer routes. Everyone adapts to whatever they are handed, nobody compares notes, and a mild drift settles in for months before it reaches a work order.
The fix costs nothing: ask for a report with three details instead of two words.
- Which lane and what kind of street, so road crown can be ruled out.
- Empty or loaded, so geometry can be separated from suspension.
- Wheel loose or wheel held straight, so a pull can be separated from an off centre steering wheel.
Three lines in the comment box of a pre-trip inspection, and the shop starts from the right place instead of opening with a blind road test. For a fleet, it is also how you catch a unit going bad before the right front tire is finished.
What we look at when the work order says “pulls”
A bus that drifts does not get sensors clamped on right away. We start by comparing the two sides of the vehicle, item by item, because a pull is almost always a symmetry story.
- Front tire pressure, equalized cold before anything is measured.
- Ride height taken left and right, loaded if the symptom only appears with passengers aboard.
- Leaf springs and bushings judged one side against the other rather than in isolation.
- Play in the steering box, tie rods and steering linkage, since no angle holds on a loose steering system.
- Caster and camber compared left to right, then axle parallelism against the centreline of the vehicle.
- A road test before and after, same conditions and same lane where possible, to confirm the behaviour really changed.
If something has to be replaced before the alignment, you get told, with a price, before we go further. Setting angles on top of a worn part buys you a month at best.
The shortcut that costs you a set of tires
When a bus pulls or its wheel sits crooked, the quick fix is to work the toe on one side until the steering wheel looks straight again. The unit leaves the shop centred and the driver is happy. The fault is untouched: the axle still pushes off line, the two front tires now run at different angles, and the wear accelerates. Centring a steering wheel is not a diagnosis, it is cosmetics.
Frequently asked questions about a bus that pulls to one side
Is a slight pull to the right normal on a bus?
A mild drift toward the shoulder on crowned pavement is normal and affects every vehicle on the road. What is not normal is a drift that survives a lane change, one that grows over time, or one that forces the driver to hold pressure on the wheel all shift.
Could it be nothing but the tires?
Yes, and that is the first thing to rule out. A pressure difference between the two steer tires is enough to move a bus off line. That is why both sides get equalized cold before any angle is measured.
My steering wheel is crooked but the bus tracks straight. Same problem?
No, and the distinction matters. An off centre wheel on a vehicle that holds its lane usually points at toe or at a rear axle that is not pushing along the vehicle centreline. Different diagnosis, different correction.
Should the bus be loaded for the alignment?
Measurement follows the vehicle manufacturer’s method and specifications. Knowing whether the symptom appears empty or loaded still changes the diagnosis, because a pull that only shows up with passengers aboard points at suspension rather than at the steer axle angles.
Is it risky to keep running the unit like this?
A bus that needs constant correction wears the driver down over a full shift, and driver fatigue behind a load of passengers is not a small thing. The drift also chews through front tires faster, and tire wear beyond the limit can turn into a finding at a periodic mechanical inspection.
