Heavy at what speed? Turning which way? Since when? On a bus, where three or four drivers share the same unit in a single week, that one sentence can describe five unrelated mechanical conditions, none of which get fixed the same way.<\/p>\n<p>Ressorts Laval \/ C.T. CAM has been repairing heavy vehicle steering in Laval for more than 50 years, buses included. This article covers one symptom only: excessive effort at the steering wheel. A bus that will not track straight, slop at the wheel before the tires respond, a noise that only shows up mid corner: those are three different symptoms with three different diagnostic paths, and none of them are covered here.<\/p>\n<h2>Heavy is an opinion until somebody measures it<\/h2>\n<p>The first obstacle with a hard steering complaint on a passenger vehicle is not mechanical. It is that nobody agrees on the baseline.<\/p>\n<p>A bus does not have a driver, it has a roster of them. Different builds, different grip, different tolerance for effort. The regular operator lives with the change day by day and eventually stops noticing it, the same way nobody notices a door at home getting stiffer over two winters. The spare board driver who climbs into that unit once a month notices it in the first parking lot. By the time the complaint reaches maintenance, the condition is usually months old.<\/p>\n<p>Three questions turn that complaint into something a technician can work with, and they cost nothing to ask:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Heavy when?<\/strong> Only stopped and at manoeuvring speed, or out on the road too?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Heavy which way?<\/strong> Both directions, or only one?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Heavy since when?<\/strong> It changed between two shifts, or it crept up over weeks?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"background: #fff8e6; border-left: 6px solid #f0a500; padding: 22px 24px; margin: 30px 0; border-radius: 8px;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0; font-size: 18px; line-height: 1.6; color: #222;\">\ud83d\udca1 <strong>A useful defect card reads like this: &#8220;Wheel heavy turning right only, stopped and at low speed, normal on the highway, first noticed Monday.&#8221; Ten extra seconds to write, and it replaces an hour of hunting in the shop.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Put a number on it with a spring scale<\/h2>\n<p>There is a simple way out of the opinion contest. Hook a spring scale on the rim of the steering wheel, pull square to the rim until the tires start to move, and read the force in pounds. It is objective, it repeats, and it can be written down.<\/p>\n<p>The industry even gives you a threshold. TRW, one of the major commercial steering gear manufacturers, defines hard steering in its steering diagnostics manual as effort at the wheel above 200 inch pounds, which works out to roughly 18 to 22 pounds measured at the rim. Past that point the vehicle still steers, but the assist is no longer keeping up.<\/p>\n<p>Three conditions make the number mean something:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Always measure the same way.<\/strong> Vehicle stopped on level dry pavement, tires on the ground, engine at idle. The same unit checked on gravel and on asphalt will not give you the same reading.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Measure both directions.<\/strong> A left to right difference is information all by itself, and it is often what points the rest of the diagnosis.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Write down the number and the date.<\/strong> One reading tells you whether you are out of range. Two readings a few months apart tell you how fast it is going, which is what actually drives the decision to pull the unit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A fleet that takes this reading once a year on every unit, alongside the checks it already does, builds a history almost nobody else has. Total investment: one spring scale.<\/p>\n<h2>Wheels up, engine off: splitting mechanical from hydraulic<\/h2>\n<p>Once the effort is confirmed abnormal, the real question is whether something is binding or the assist has quit pushing. Both feel identical from the driver seat, and that is exactly why pumps still get replaced on vehicles whose problem was somewhere else entirely.<\/p>\n<p>This is shop work. The unit goes up properly, steer tires clear of the floor, vehicle chocked. Then three steps.<\/p>\n<h3>Step one: wheels up, engine off<\/h3>\n<p>Turn the wheel by hand, slowly, lock to lock. With no assist and no vehicle weight on the tires, all you are feeling is raw mechanical friction. If it drags here, or if there is a tight spot at one point in the travel, the fault is mechanical: dry or seizing king pins, a thrust bearing that has stopped turning, a binding point in the steering linkage, or the column itself. Hydraulics have nothing to do with it, and a new pump will not change a thing.<\/p>\n<h3>Step two: wheels up, engine running<\/h3>\n<p>If everything moved freely a moment ago and it now becomes noticeably lighter, the assist is doing its job. A unit that passes both earlier steps but still fights you on the ground is pointing at tires, inflation pressure, steer axle load or wheel geometry, not at a broken part.<\/p>\n<div style=\"background: #fff8e6; border-left: 6px solid #f0a500; padding: 22px 24px; margin: 30px 0; border-radius: 8px;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0; font-size: 18px; line-height: 1.6; color: #222;\">\ud83d\udca1 <strong>The whole logic is subtraction. Wheels up and engine off leaves nothing but the mechanism. Start the engine and you add the assist. Lower it and you add the road. Whichever step the effort comes back at is the one holding your answer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>When the effort shows up tells you where to look<\/h2>\n<p>Even before the vehicle goes up on the hoist, the pattern of the complaint shortens the list considerably.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Heavy only when stopped or crawling.<\/strong> The most common profile on a bus, and the most misleading, because everything feels fine once the unit is rolling. At walking speed the steering asks the most from the assist and the tire has to pivot in place. Two candidates share this one: an assist that no longer delivers at idle, or king pins that are running dry.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Heavy both ways, all the time.<\/strong> Something is dragging on the whole system rather than on one corner. Assist gets looked at first, then both king pins, which tend to dry out together because they get the same service or the same neglect.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Heavy one way only.<\/strong> Rarely hydraulic, since an assist has no reason to work well left and poorly right. Look for one side binding, or for a worn steering gear.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The wheel will not come back to centre on its own.<\/strong> Worth reporting even when turning effort feels normal. A mechanism that turns but refuses to return almost always means friction in the pivots or steering geometry that has moved. On a unit making tight turns all day, drivers quietly start hand winding the wheel back and the defect never gets written up.<\/li>\n<li><strong>It changed overnight.<\/strong> Progressive wear does not behave that way. Effort that jumps between shifts suggests a failure or a fluid loss, and that unit does not go back out with passengers before somebody looks at it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Route work is what dries out a bus king pin<\/h2>\n<p>There is a mechanical reason steering effort becomes a bus problem before it becomes a highway tractor problem, and it comes down to the kind of work the vehicle does.<\/p>\n<p>A road tractor steers little, and it steers while rolling. A bus goes to full lock at walking speed dozens of times a shift: easing into a stop, pulling back out, squaring off a tight residential corner, swinging through a school loading loop. That is precisely the manoeuvre that loads king pins hardest, because the wheel pivots with the full front weight sitting on it and none of the rolling motion that normally helps. One week of route work puts more loaded steering cycles through those pins than a linehaul tractor accumulates in months.<\/p>\n<p>Which leads to a practical point: on a bus, greasing the king pins is not one lubrication point among many. It is the one that decides what the steering will feel like two years from now. Axle manufacturers each publish their own interval and they differ enough that you should follow the one for your axle rather than a rule of thumb. What does not change is the method.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pump until fresh grease appears at the seals.<\/strong> Two or three strokes prove nothing. Until something comes out, you do not know the grease arrived.<\/li>\n<li><strong>If nothing comes out, write it up instead of moving on.<\/strong> A plugged passage or a dead zerk means that pin has been running dry since the last service.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Remember the season.<\/strong> Salt and water find their way past a tired seal. A pivot that never gets purged with new grease keeps all of it inside.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tie rod ends and the rest of the linkage need the same discipline, with their own quirks, and we cover that in our article on steering play.<\/p>\n<h2>Two things to check in the yard first<\/h2>\n<p>Before booking shop time, two checks can be done where the vehicle is parked, and between them they account for a good share of heavy steering complaints.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Steer tire pressure, read cold.<\/strong> An underinflated tire spreads its contact patch, and anything that widens that patch raises the force needed to pivot it. It is the cheapest cause to rule out and the one most often skipped, because an underinflated heavy vehicle tire does not look underinflated. Check that both sides match too: a left to right pressure difference loads the steering unevenly and does a convincing impression of a mechanical fault.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Power steering fluid level and condition.<\/strong> One look in the reservoir. It is whether it rolls tomorrow morning. Steering effort that changed abruptly, that varies unpredictably from one corner to the next, or that clearly exceeds what a driver could deliver in an emergency manoeuvre is not something you dispatch while waiting for a shop slot. Effort that is stable and slightly high can be scheduled. Effort that moves on its own cannot.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>How we work a steering effort complaint<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>We measure the effort before touching anything<\/strong>, both directions, so we know where we started and can show the improvement afterward.<\/li>\n<li><strong>We run the three step check<\/strong>, wheels up engine off, wheels up engine running, then wheels down. That is what decides whether this is a mechanical file or a hydraulic one.<\/li>\n<li><strong>We inspect the king pins and the steering linkage<\/strong> for friction as well as for play. Those are two different faults living in the same place, and a vehicle can easily have both.<\/li>\n<li><strong>We check the geometry if everything else is sound<\/strong>, because abnormal effort with no guilty component often turns up in the wheel angles.<\/li>\n<li><strong>We measure the effort again at the end<\/strong> and hand you the number with the keys. That is the baseline for next time.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If a part needs replacing, you hear what we found and why before we go any further. Nobody here replaces a pump on a hunch.<\/p>\n<h2>Common questions about hard steering on a bus<\/h2>\n<h3>Is a bus supposed to be hard to steer?<\/h3>\n<p>No. A heavy vehicle in good condition takes more effort than a car when stopped, but it stays easy to manoeuvre, including at full lock. If your drivers are complaining, it is not because the unit is a bus. It is because something changed.<\/p>\n<h3>It only fights me in the yard, never on the road. Is that urgent?<\/h3>\n<p>Not necessarily urgent, but never normal, and it will not improve on its own. That is the textbook profile of an assist starting to fall short at idle or of king pins running dry. Both are straightforward when caught early and expensive when they are not.<\/p>\n<h3>The wheel does not return to centre after a turn. Same problem?<\/h3>\n<p>Close relative, not the same thing. Turning effort and return to centre are two separate behaviours, and a vehicle can steer with normal effort while refusing to straighten itself out. We look at pivot friction first, then at steering geometry.<\/p>\n<h3>Can I run the check myself in the yard?<\/h3>\n<p>The spring scale reading, absolutely. The wheels up portion, no. Lifting the steer axle of a bus takes the right equipment and the right lift points. That part belongs in a shop, not in a parking lot.<\/p>\n<h3>Can tire pressure really change the effort that much?<\/h3>\n<p>Yes, especially at low speed. A soft steer tire enlarges the patch that has to twist against the pavement, and effort follows. Equalize it before concluding anything else, because it costs nothing.<\/p>\n<h3>Will an alignment fix hard steering?<\/h3>\n<p>Sometimes, once everything else checks out. Front wheel angles do influence steering effort and return to centre. But an alignment performed on a binding mechanism or a weak assist buys you nothing, so those two get verified before any angle gets measured.<\/p>\n<h3>Do you handle school buses?<\/h3>\n<p>Yes. School buses, transit buses and motorcoaches, same as heavy trucks and trailers.
