But the tires are wearing unevenly again, your fuel consumption has crept up, and the steering wheel is ever so slightly off-center on a straight road. These are not random events: they are signs that alignment is due again.<\/p>\n<p>We have written about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ril-ctcam.com\/en\/heavy-truck-laser-alignment\/\">how laser alignment works<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ril-ctcam.com\/en\/camber-caster-toe-truck-explained\/\">what camber, caster and toe actually mean<\/a>. This article focuses on two practical questions that come up constantly at our shop: how often should a heavy truck be aligned, and what does it cost, including for a full tractor-trailer setup?<\/p>\n<h2>Why alignment goes out of spec<\/h2>\n<p>Alignment does not drift on its own in a perfect world. In Quebec, we do not drive in a perfect world.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Roads:<\/strong> spring potholes, expansion joints, construction zone patches on Routes 15 and 440. Every hard impact shifts suspension geometry slightly. It adds up over the season.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Load cycles:<\/strong> a fully loaded truck endures enormous forces at every braking, cornering and acceleration event. Those forces act on steering and suspension components, and angles shift over time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Component replacement:<\/strong> every time a suspension part is replaced (leaf spring, bushing, shock absorber, steering rod), the angles can shift slightly. Alignment after any suspension repair is not optional.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Normal wear:<\/strong> steering joints and rods accumulate slight play over kilometres. An alignment at 60,000 km on a long-haul truck is not excessive: it is protection for a tire investment worth thousands of dollars.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Align regardless of mileage after: a significant pothole or impact, any suspension or steering repair, new tire installation, or every spring after the Quebec thaw season.<\/p>\n<h2>Tractor-trailer alignment: more complex than most people realize<\/h2>\n<p>Here is where many operators make a costly mistake: they align the tractor but not the trailer. Both need to be aligned, ideally at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>The trailer has its own axles with their own angles. If the trailer axles are not parallel to each other and to the tractor, the whole unit side-scrubs slightly down the highway, a condition called dog-tracking. On a Class 8 truck, a full set of tires costs $8,000 to $15,000. Balancing equalizes the weight of each individual wheel to eliminate vibration. Both can be done at the same time, but they are separate jobs requiring different equipment.<\/p>\n<h3>Do I need to align the trailer every time?<\/h3>\n<p>Not necessarily every time. At least once per year for a dedicated trailer in regular service. If you swap trailers frequently, tractor-only alignment is sufficient.<\/p>\n<h3>How long does a heavy truck alignment take?<\/h3>\n<p>For a 2-axle truck, one to two hours. For a 3-axle rigid or a full tractor-trailer, plan two to four hours. If we find suspension components that need replacing before the alignment, it could be a full day.<\/p>\n<h3>I just had an alignment but the truck still pulls. Why?<\/h3>\n<p>A few possible causes: a worn suspension bushing creating dynamic play that overrides the static alignment, a steering component with play, or a tire with internal deformation.
