Here is how to recognize the signs early, before what starts as a vibration becomes a roadside breakdown.<\/p>\n<h2>Types of axles on a heavy truck<\/h2>\n<p>Not all axles serve the same purpose:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Drive axle (rear):<\/strong> receives power from the engine through the transmission and drive shaft. It houses the differential and the axle shafts that deliver power to each drive wheel. On a tandem truck, there are two drive axles.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Steer axle (front):<\/strong> carries the steering wheels and supports the weight of the cab and engine. On most conventional heavy trucks, it does not transmit torque.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Trailer axles:<\/strong> carry the load and serve the brake system but have no drive function.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This article focuses on the drive axle, the rear axle assembly, which is the most common source of failure on heavy trucks in intensive service.<\/p>\n<h2>5 signs of a damaged drive axle<\/h2>\n<h3>1. Rear vibration at a specific speed<\/h3>\n<p>A vibration that appears at a precise speed range (say, between 80 and 100 km\/h) and clearly comes from the rear of the truck is often an axle shaft or wheel bearing with developing play. This is different from a drive shaft vibration (which is more of a general oscillation) or an out-of-balance tire (which transmits through the steering wheel).<\/p>\n<h3>2. Deep rumbling sound from the rear<\/h3>\n<p>A worn wheel bearing on a drive axle produces a deep, grinding rumble that increases with speed. The noise often changes when cornering: if it decreases when turning left and increases when turning right, it is typically the right-side bearing that is failing.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Differential oil leak on the axle<\/h3>\n<p>A leak visible on the differential housing or along the axle indicates a failed gasket or seal. Differential oil that drops without replenishment means the gears and bearings run without adequate lubrication, leading directly to accelerated wear or failure.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Cracking or clunking on departure<\/h3>\n<p>A sharp crack when pulling away from a dead stop under load can indicate worn splines on an axle shaft. The splines transmit torque from the differential to the wheel. When worn, they have play that clunks each time the load is applied.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Do not drive with a confirmed cracking noise or growing rear vibration without an inspection.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Most common causes of drive axle failure<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Chronic overloading:<\/strong> regularly exceeding the axle&#8217;s nominal weight rating weakens axle shafts and accelerates bearing wear. This is the number one cause of premature failure we see.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Low differential oil:<\/strong> without regular oil level and condition checks, gears and bearings run without adequate lubrication.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Violent impact:<\/strong> a deep road hole or a high-speed departure from the road can bend an axle shaft or damage a bearing in a single event.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Corrosion from road salt:<\/strong> Quebec de-icing salt attacks axle seals. The drive shaft is the long rotating tube between the gearbox and the differential. Both can cause vibration, but in different locations and with different characteristics.<\/p>\n<h3>Can a bent axle shaft be straightened?<\/h3>\n<p>No. A bent axle shaft must be replaced. The torque loads it is subjected to make any straightening attempt unreliable.<\/p>\n<h3>My tandem truck has two drive axles. Do both need servicing at the same time?<\/h3>\n<p>Not necessarily. But if both axles have the same mileage and the same history of overloading, inspect both when you open one. Often both bearings need replacing even if only one is making noise.<\/p>\n<h3>How do I know if it is the axle or the differential making the noise?<\/h3>\n<p>An axle noise generally varies with wheel speed. A differential noise varies more with load, increasing under acceleration and sometimes disappearing under deceleration.
